Athens – the Classic City

Now that you’re headed to Classic City, we thought you might want to get to know the city.

So here are few of our favorite facts:

Favorite Story
The tree that owns it self

  • The story of the tree that owns itself first appeared in the Athens Weekly Banner, in August 12, 1890.  As the story goes William Jackson so loved his childhood tree that he deeded the land surrounding the tree to the tree itself.  While the legal standing of the legend is weak, Athenians have taken the legend to heart and the Athens-Clarke government has decided that the tree should be taken under municipal care.  On the evening of October 9, 1942 the tree fell after a long period of decline.  On December 4, 1946 the Athens’ Junior Ladies Garden Club planted the ‘Son of the Tree that Owns Itself’ home grown from acorns of the original tree.

 Best Events

Twilight Criterium

Every April for almost 30 years, cyclists descend on Athens for a variety of nighttime races.  Outside of football Saturdays, Twilight is the biggest event in Athens.

Athfest

Athens best summer event, is a artist and music festival.  Filling the streets of downtown with local artists’ paintings and live music Athfest is family friendly event that spreads the local flair of Athens.

These are just a few of few of our favorite stories.  We hope you’ll find a few of your own while you’re here.

Basically if you have not been here you should come. For all of you coming to EDB from out of town, ask any of us where to go… we’ll be glad to help point out anything and everything and maybe even tag along!
