Getting to know Grady

At the University of Georgia getting in the Grady College is a big deal, particularly in public relations. It could be that PR is what all the cool kids want to do, but more likely is that the Grady College is known for its quality educational program. In fact the Grady College is ranked fourth among the 16 ‘Premier Programs’ for graduate studies in public relations by Marquette University (Milwaukee), which ranks the nation’s leading schools offering advanced degrees in public relations.

The Grady college was named after Henry W. Grady, a UGA alumnus and beloved managing editor of the Atlanta Journal (predecessor of the Atlanta Journal Constitution). The college was founded in 1915 by S.V. Sanford. Its first true dean was John E. Drewry. These two men immediately set to making Grady the institution in the Southeast with programs like:

Throughout the years Grady created numerous communication programs and organizations to help educate their students. Today, as world has turned to social media so has Grady College.

The New Media Institute provides students with the opportunity to become new media certified. The program hones their skills in Web design and production, social media, computer technologies.

Last fall Grady hosted UGA Connect, a social media conference to discuss with social media “experts”, educators and students the role of social media in public relations. Like the Edelman Digtal Bootcamp, UGA Connect was planned by senior campaigns students in less than one semester and was huge success. Live coverage of the event was provided by Dr. Kaye Sweetser’s social media class.

And let’s not forget about our faculty. Grady faculty have more than 30 awards for merit including the 2007 PRSA Educator of the Year , Regent’s Teaching Award of Excellence, Lilly Teaching Fellows, Russell awards, and others. They also offer their thoughts to world as the Blogs Dawgs.

Grady College has a long and rich history of communication. Today, with the Edelman Digital Bootcamp we hope to add to the tradition of excellence and spread of knowledge.
